Helmet Size Guide: Will It Fit Before You Buy?

One number decides whether a wearable helmet will fit you, and it is not your hat size. It is the circumference of your head at its widest point, taken with a soft tape. Every helmet and mask we sell is sized against that number, and a molded shell has no stretch to forgive a guess.

This guide covers how to measure properly, what the ranges on our product pages mean in practice, which helmet suits which head, and what to do if you wear glasses, sit at the edge of a range or fall outside it. There is also one helmet we cannot give you a number for yet, and we name it.

Why fit matters more on a replica helmet

A cap that is a little tight stretches. A helmet does not. Too small, and the shell presses on your forehead and temples until a mild ache at the start of a convention becomes a headache by the afternoon. Too big, and it moves when you turn your head, and because you see through narrow eye openings, a helmet that shifts even slightly leaves you looking at the inside of the faceplate.

Weight is part of it too. Our Iron Man helmets weigh 1130 g. Sitting squarely on a head that fits, that weight settles evenly. On a head it is loose on, it rocks forward and your neck does the work of holding it in place.

How to measure your head

You need a soft tape measure, the kind used for sewing. No tape? A piece of string or a phone charging cable works: wrap it round, pinch the point where it meets, then lay it flat against a ruler.

Find the widest line. Run the tape about 2.5 cm (1 in) above your eyebrows, just above the tops of your ears, and around the fullest part of the back of your head, where the skull bulges out slightly.
Keep it level. The tape should sit roughly parallel to the floor all the way round. A tilted tape gives you a misleading number.
Snug, not tight. It should lie flat against your head without pressing a mark into your skin.
Measure three times. Take the tape off between attempts and keep the largest of the three.
Wear your hair the way you will wear it under the helmet. A bun, a ponytail or thick braids at the back all add to the number, and so does a skull cap if you plan to wear one for sweat.
Get someone else to do it if you can. Keeping the tape level is far easier from the outside.

Write the result down in both centimeters and inches. Our product pages lead with centimeters, and having both saves converting later.

Do not go by your hat size

Hat labels like S, M, L or 7 1/4 are not a substitute. Letter sizes are set by each brand, so a large from one maker can be a medium from another, and a cap that feels right may sit higher on your head than a helmet will. Use the tape.

What the numbers on a product page mean

When a page says a helmet fits 55-62 cm, the shell and padding are designed around heads anywhere in that band. Where you fall inside it changes how the helmet feels:

Near the bottom of the range, the padding does most of the work of holding the helmet steady. It fits, but it has more room to move.
In the middle, you get the fit the helmet was designed around.
Near the top, the padding is compressed and the helmet sits snug. Fine for shorter stretches, and worth a trial run at home before a long day out.

A figure written as "up to 60 cm" is a ceiling with no stated floor. It tells you the largest head a piece is designed for, not the smallest. And when a page calls something one-size-fits-most, the measurement printed beside that phrase is the part to rely on.

Iron Man helmets: 55 to 62 cm

The MK5, MK50 and MK17 Heartbreaker share the same published fit, 55-62 cm, and the same 1130 g weight. That is useful in its own right, because it means fit should not be what decides between them. Choose on the faceplate and finish, which our MK5 vs MK50 vs MK17 comparison walks through, and the size question is the same whichever you pick.

Circumference does not capture everything. It says nothing about the length of your face, and a closed faceplate sits close to the nose and chin. We do not publish a face-length measurement for these helmets, so if you have a long face or a strong jaw and sit near the top of the range, contact us before you order.

When it is not on your head, an Iron Man helmet stand holds any of the three upright at eye level, which is kinder to the finish than a crowded shelf.

Transformers helmets: read each one

This is where our published numbers differ most, so check each helmet rather than assuming.

Bumblebee, 57-61 cm. The narrowest range we publish, and it starts higher than the Iron Man helmets. A 56 cm head sits inside the Iron Man range but below Bumblebee's, so a head that suits an Iron Man helmet can still find the Bumblebee loose. Inside there is a fabric lining with padding.

Megatron, up to 60 cm. A lower ceiling than both the Iron Man helmets and Bumblebee. If your head measures over 60 cm, Megatron is the one to rule out first.

Optimus Prime, not published. The product page gives the helmet's outside dimensions, 254 x 329 x 372 mm, and confirms a padded interior, but no head circumference. We are confirming it with the supplier rather than printing a number we cannot stand behind. Until it is published, if fit is the deciding factor, choose Bumblebee, which has a confirmed range, or ask us before ordering.

Fabric masks and the Daredevil shell

Both Spider-Man masks are stretch fabric, listed up to 60 cm. Stretch gives them more room below that figure than a helmet has, but not unlimited room. On a small head the fabric can bunch and the eye lenses drift away from your eyes, which spoils the look long before it becomes uncomfortable.

The Daredevil Born Again mask looks soft in photos because of its woven suit texture, but it is a molded shell with that texture sculpted in, fitted together with a magnetic assembly. Treat its 62 cm figure the way you would a helmet's: a hard limit, not a rough guide.

What the padding can and cannot do

Padding takes up the gap between your head and the shell, stops the helmet rotating, and spreads the weight so no single spot carries it. It is the reason a helmet can have a range at all instead of a single size.

What it cannot do is make the shell bigger. If your head is over the top of a range, pushing the helmet on harder will not help. And resist the urge to pull padding out to make room. It changes where the helmet sits, which moves the eye openings away from your eyes, and our warranty does not cover unauthorized modifications.

If you wear glasses

We do not publish a glasses clearance for any of these pieces, so this is what to expect rather than a promise.

The arms of your glasses sit between the padding and your head. Near the top of a size range, that adds pressure at the temples.
A closed faceplate sits close to your face. Larger frames can touch the inside of it, and lenses can fog in a closed helmet.
Slim frames with flexible arms cause the least trouble. If you already wear contact lenses, they avoid the problem entirely.
Stretch masks press frames against your face. Glasses under a fabric Spider-Man mask are rarely comfortable for long.

Do replica helmets fit big heads?

Here is the straight answer for ours. The largest published figure is 62 cm (24.4 in), shared by the three Iron Man helmets and the Daredevil mask. Bumblebee goes to 61 cm, and Megatron and both Spider-Man masks to 60 cm.

If your head measures more than 62 cm, none of our published ranges cover you, and we would rather tell you that now than have you order and hope. At 61-62 cm, an Iron Man helmet will be snug with the padding well compressed, so give it a trial wear at home before any long event.

Smaller heads and younger wearers

Below 55 cm, the Iron Man helmets can sit low and move about, and a thin skull cap only takes up a little of the difference. If you are buying for a teenager, measure the actual wearer rather than going by age. The Optimus Prime helmet, for example, is recommended for ages 14 and up, but an age recommendation tells you nothing about head size.

Buying a helmet as a gift

This is the hard case. Measuring someone's head without them noticing is close to impossible, and a hat that fits them is not a reliable guide for the reasons above. If you can find a way to ask, ask. If you cannot, a piece that is not worn is the safer present. If it arrives and does not fit

Contact us before sending anything back. A helmet that feels wrong in the first minute sometimes settles once the padding warms up and gives a little, and sometimes it simply does not fit.
